It is quite possible that when you have an old laptop, you might want to try to restore it back to its original condition. It is possible that something might have gone wrong on the machine or it just needed a minor fix to be functioning again. Even though a brand new machine is cheap, you might as well get the old one working again if you know that it can still function. Find out what things you should do.
There is a chance that you will need to replace the hard drive. This is typically the first thing that goes out on a laptop. With new hardware on the market you’ll find brand new drives are reasonably cheap and in most cases they will be much larger in storage size than your old drive was. Keep in mind that if the drive is functioning fine, this is completely optional.
One way to speed up your old system is to buy more RAM for it. Many of the older machines are very slow as they didn’t come with much RAM. This is one of the cheapest upgrades possible and will make the machine work much better. Don’t get more than 3 gigabytes as you will not be able to use more than that on a 32 bit operating system which is most likely what you own.
Keep in mind that if the hardware works, you probably have a software related issue that needs to be addressed.
The first step in fixing your system is backing up all the files on your computer. This is so that you can access and restore them later if you mess them up when messing around with the system and trying to fix what is wrong with it.
A lot of the time it’s best to simply not go through manually fixing the problems and just reload the entire operating system. It could save you a lot of time and frustration and it isn’t as hard as it sounds. It will wipe the drive and put everything back like new with the factory settings just like you had it the first day you turned it on. This should and in most cases significantly increase the speed and make the machine feel restored.
If you don’t do it this way and would like to try your luck at fixing the issues, get some good spyware, virus, and registry tools. Do what you can to fix as many of the errors as you can on your own. This improves performance.
